Totem poles hold a sacred tradition in the Native American culture, especially in the Pacific Northwest. The animal likenesses, or effigies,
are symbolic of different animal spirit guides. These guides are thought to enter our lives at various
times and for various reasons. They are said to provide the direction we need at the time. It is thought that if we listen to the wisdom of
our animal spirits they will show us the right path.
Totem poles were symbolic of different tribes or native families. In some cultures they were indicative of events in the lives of the family, which were represented on the carvings themselves. The first
poles were carved from native hardwoods of the Pacific Northwest. They were placed at entrances to
tribal longhouses to honor the families status as well as its ancestors. They also honored the achievements of the family. Each piece tells a
unique story that is not always decipherable to anyone but the family to whom it belongs.
And to this family it is held sacred.
These pieces also represent the temporary cycles of change. Since they are made from wood, there are
