Totem poles hold a sacred tradition in the Native American culture, especially in the Pacific Northwest. The animal likenesses, or effigies, are symbolic of different animal spirit guides. These guides are thought to enter our lives at various times and for various reasons. They are said to provide the direction we need at the time. It is thought that if we listen to the wisdom of our animal spirits they will show us the right path.

Totem poles were symbolic of different tribes or native families. In some cultures they were indicative of events in the lives of the family, which were represented on the carvings themselves. The first poles were carved from native hardwoods of the Pacific Northwest. They were placed at entrances to tribal longhouses to honor the families status as well as its ancestors. They also honored the achievements of the family. Each piece tells a unique story that is not always decipherable to anyone but the family to whom it belongs. And to this family it is held sacred.

These pieces also represent the temporary cycles of change. Since they are made from wood, there are not many existing original totems that are more than a few hundred years old. This has special meaning since the cycle of life revolves.

Totems were popular among the tribes of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Vancouver, BC, as well as all over British Columbia. We at Zimporter are proud to be able to offer these fine reproductions for very low prices. We have them in several sizes as well so you can select the right one for your space. These pieces are made just for us. We work directly with the carvers. We choose the effigies and colors and oversee the quality of the work. Wherever you place these, they will add a unique touch. The colors are deep and rich like that of the Pacific Northwest coast and fit in with many types of decor. Browns, reds, rich greens and terra cotta grace these pieces, making them suitable for a wide choice of settings.

We happily offer low shipping rates to Canada and all fifty states.
